Lives and works in Basel
In her rgouaches, Basel-based artist Laura Mietrup unfolds a precisely composed tension between geometric rigor and organic openness. A reduced color palette, the interplay of line and surface, and a controlled gesture reveal a sculptural sensibility within the medium of drawing. Several new works are on view in the group exhibition Persistence of Painting—poetic interventions that both suggest and destabilize visual order.
Here, Mietrup expands her formal vocabulary into a system that demands active interpretation. Seemingly familiar forms resist clarity, transforming into a cryptic and open-ended visual language. Reflections on modernist aesthetics emerge alongside a subtle inquiry into her own artistic position.
Laura Mietrup studied Fine Arts at HGK Basel (BA) and Contemporary Art Practice at HKB Bern (MA). Her conceptually grounded practice has received numerous distinctions, including the BEWE Foundation Prize, the Exhibition Prize of the Kunstmuseum Olten, as well as grants from the Aargauer Kuratorium and the Basel-Stadt Art Credit. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions at see you next Tuesday, Kunsthalle Arbon, Kunsthaus Baselland, Balzer Projects, and Ausstellungsraum Klingental.
