Lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, DE
In his latest series, Hendrik Zimmer draws on the traditional technique of the woodcut, which he puts into a new perspective. Enforced outlines, stylization of the surface, the tendency towards closed color areas and strict geometrics are inherent in this technique, which Zimmer integrates quite deliberately into his clear, powerful images. In doing so, he experiments with different color densities, color intensities, and structures, thus continuing the typical play of his earlier work, which oscillates between two- and three-dimensionality, as well as pictorial surface and pictorial depth. Zimmer develops his visual language by bringing together shapes and objects from various contexts. Based on this, he develops his own pictorial worlds, which do not ‚depict‘ anything, but are something entirely their own. They arise from Zimmer‘s „ascination with the world and its people, its beauty and its abysses,“ suggesting familiar sights, but allowing the viewer to fill the resulting realms with own impressions and experiences. Hendrik Zimmer graduated as a master student of Tobias Rehberger at the Städelschule. His works can be found in important collections in Europe, North and South America, including large-scale, site-specific pieces.
