In 2019, the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, renowned for his often irreverent and eccentric sculptures, caused a sensation in the art world at Art Basel Miami Beach with Comedian: a banana affixed to a wall with silver duct tape, presented at a price of $120,000. In 2024, the work was auctioned at Sotheby’s New York for $6.2 million.

Cattelan’s Comedian offered a spectacularly ironic meditation on the art market and on the mechanisms through which value is attributed to works of art. Patricia Waller’s Für Maurizio takes up this iconic gesture with her own sly sense of humor, translating it into the medium of crochet. As early as the 1990s, Waller had created a series of crocheted works entitled Don’t Kill Your Idols, in which she playfully reinterpreted celebrated works from the history of art. The fact that a crocheted banana peel was already part of her oeuvre made the temptation to rework Cattelan’s work simply irresistible.

Waller’s version offers one distinct advantage over the original: her banana need not be replaced every three days. It also comes at a slightly more modest price.

Patricia Wallers Für Maurizio greift diese ikonische Geste mit ihrem eigenen verschmitzten Humor auf und übersetzt sie in das Medium der Häkelarbeit. Bereits in den 1990er-Jahren schuf Waller unter dem Titel Don’t Kill Your Idols eine Serie von Häkelarbeiten, in denen sie berühmte Werke der Kunstgeschichte auf spielerische Weise neu interpretierte. Da sich eine gehäkelte Bananenschale bereits in ihrem Œuvre befand, war die Versuchung schlicht unwiderstehlich.

Wallers Version bietet einen entscheidenden Vorteil gegenüber dem Original: Anders als Cattelans Banane muss ihre nicht alle drei Tage ausgetauscht werden. Noch dazu ist sie etwas günstiger.
