ART COLOGNE 2024 | ANDREW GILBERT
7 – 10 NOVEMBER | STAND A218
We are pleased to present Andrew Gilbert (*1980 Edinburgh, Scotland, lives and works in Berlin) at Art Cologne this year.
We will be sharing our stand in the Collaborations sector of Art Cologne with Livie from Zurich showing works by Sarah Bogner (*1980 Munich, lives and works in Vienna). Both artists are known for their inventive way of drawing animals. Like in fables, the featured anthropomorphized creatures suggest a fictionality and lightness at first sight but after closer inspection they serve as revealers of human society.
In his works on paper and large-scale installations, the Scottish artist Andrew Gilbert (*1980) combines historical facts with fictive situations as well as the visionary with the absurd. The impulse is provided mostly by incidents connected with colonialism, especially that of the British Empire. Gilbert depicts the repetition of history and the impact of 19th century imperialism on today. His work also examines colonial propaganda in popular culture and literature. He challenges the Western controlled narrative and nostalgia for Empire today. Following recent social and political developments the questions Andrew Gilbert asks, in a darkly humorous and often brutal manner, are more relevant than ever.
