(*1968 in Kempten, Austria; lives and works in Frankfurt am Main, Germany)
Mathias Kessler is an Austrian artist who lives and works in Austria and New York. He uses photography, painting, drawing, installation, film, performance, and other media to explore how humans relate to the natural world. By combining romantic painting, concept and earth art, and digital techniques, he questions the boundaries between nature and culture, ideology and aesthetics. His work highlights the links between society, natural resources, and economic interests, inviting reflection on today’s ecological and social issues. Most recently, he presented a large site-specific work as part of the Busan Biennale Sea Art Festival.
