At first glance, the works of Berlin-based artist Rubica von Streng appear to the viewer as open spaces—fields that allow room for one’s own consciousness as well as for associations and interpretations. The artist’s perspective itself, however, is clearly oriented toward the future, addressing our world through a forward-looking lens. Contemporary issues such as the climate crisis and human conflict—and, in particular, their impact on nature—find expression in parts of her work.
Rather than presenting dystopian or hopeless visions of the world around us, the artist instead reveals the possibility of a respectful coexistence. Layered, almost translucent organic forms evoke flora and fauna while fully resisting figuration. The bright colours, at times applied in translucent washes and at others in opaque passages, appear dreamlike yet neither artificial nor alien. For the artist, these are plausible visions—and prospects—of the future.
